Second Treatise of Government Customer Reviews

:
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Worth the time and the money for anyone who wants to better understand what America was REALLY meant to be : While it's tough to slog through the LONG sentences and convoluted writing of a 17th century lawyer, THIS is one of the key sources that the Framers of America's Constitution used for the basis of their thinking. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2016 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Billie Pritchett -- I'm happy to have read John Locke's Second Treatise of Government : I'm happy to have read John Locke's Second Treatise of Government. In this work, Locke argues that the purpose of government is to preserve people's life, freedom, and property, or as he writes life, "liberty," and property. The American founders were very much influenced by Locke's work here, which is why Americans' right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" is guaranteed in our Declaration of Independence. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from D. D. LeDu -- A view of the thought process that created us : I have read excerpts and references to this book, but had never made the effort to read it for myself. What a fool I was! ( Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2013 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Alhallow -- Required reading for any sensible adult : John Locke, to this day, which is well past his own time, is still a scholar and an intellectual well beyond most alive today. His writings on government and beyond should be required readings for all persons. I highly recommend him. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2021 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Nidorina -- Bad Digital Copy : This is a really bad digital import of this essay. This is additionally annoying because the original and the copy are both in English. Throughout the book the word "man" or "men" is translated as "guys" and at one point "injured party" is "birthday party." Someone ran this through a scanner and didn't proofread it. It's available online for free, so don't waste your money, this makes what is already a philosophical treatise completely unintelligible. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from crag cohea -- Important to understand our Constitution : I had a copy in college which I had lost. Lately I signed up for an online course on the Constitution. This treatise was mentioned often so I bought it. Important for every conscientious citizen. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Joseph Raborg -- A Most Important Philosopher for Americans : If any of you have not read Locke, you should, especially if you're an American. His cogent arguments form all the justifications for the American Revolution. His arguments are all very logical and rely much on commonsense. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Scriptwriter66 -- Extremely necessary : A classic and essential book by one of my favorite authors ( Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Mike Davey -- Great book but problems with publisher : The Second Treatise by Locke is one of the major works of political thought. It is cited as one of the major planks of Social Contract theory, along with Hobbes, Rousseau. Locke and Rousseau put forward differing counters to Hobbes Absolutism; Locke describes 'Compact' and 'Commonwealth' while Rousseau writes at length of the 'Social Contract' and Locke's account is very much still before the Enlightenment thought of the 18th Century, so Rousseau writes from a more Rationalist approach, with the State of Nature clearly more of an abstract tool, rather than a real pre-contract existence. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Old Ben -- Five stars for having made such an interesting work available ... : to be able to study them in this way and gain a wider understanding of history. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 11, 2014 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Christine -- Equal rights : A political book and a good argument for equal rights. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 4, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Wishing Well -- Landmark of political theory : An interesting, if wordy, read. Far-sighted recommendations, from a leading political philosopher, on the desirable features of a just government of the future. The fact that many of these recommendations seemed groundbreaking at the time, but are now standard features of national constitutions, underlines the genius of Locke, all those centuries ago. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 20, 2016 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mr S. Christopher -- Another classic : Another classic free book which is well set out for a modern audience. Always been interested in Locke and this didn't disappoint. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 22, 2012 )
